The Passing of an Oracle

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oracle
An oracle is a person or agency considered to be a source of wise counsel or prophetic opinion; an infallible authority, usually spiritual in nature. It may also be a revealed prediction or precognition of the future, from deities, that is spoken through another object or life-form (e.g.: augury and auspice).Drooling_Dash

As a breeder you look for qualities in your foundation stock.  You need your primary or core group to have a quality that supercedes expectations. You need them to be undefinable and immeasurable.  Then you carefully weave these qualities throughout your lineages.  You keep a few for the future, but you hope today will not pass too quickly.

Last night as we drifted off we both had the same feeling.  We felt it was Dash’s last night.  His life had been a good one.  Recently, he had been prancing and dancing and doing well.  Last last evening, however, he was nauseous and it was evident he didn’t feel well.  By bedtime he was acting odd.  He was not suffering but he came to us for special attention.  The look he had on his face was one that said “Goodbye” and at the same time “Hold me” and “Help me feel better.”  We both lavished him with special attention and then he wanted to get in his crate.  Normally he sleeps on his orthopedic bed near us but last night he crawled into his crate and settled.  Shortly thereafter he passed without a whimper or evidence of pain.

This morning our hearts know both sadness and pain…………that feeling of loss that many of you know all too well.  He was 12 years old.  The good news for us is that he was doing well until the end.  Then the end came quickly and seemingly painlessly.  The sad news is our lives will never be the same.  Yes, we have other Weims but we cannot replace Dash.  It will be difficult to share Dash’s passing with our extended family.  Everyone and especially the grandchildren adored him.  He will live on here at OwyheeStar in our hearts as well as in his offspring.  He will be missed by many………..Dash June 23 2007_1225

He was awesome in the water.  He taught Dusty and Zee to Swim.  Last week he went swimming in the pond. We are glad he was able to take one last swim before departing here.Water Ret Feb 2006_0115sm

Above:   He is retrieving a dummy.  Right:  He and Dusty water retrieve together.

We will never forget Dash the puppy.  We will never forget how he loved the whelping process and the tiny pups. He always watched vigilantly over the young pups. On one occasion Dash even came to find us to save a pup’s life.

Did we say he loved the water?  He could swim at Lake Owyhee until Cliff’s arm could no longer toss the dummy.  Then we bought a rocket launcher.  We still had to limit the number of retrieves.  He could go on forever!  We will never forget how he swam with ease, power, and grace.  We will never forget his love towards us.  We will never forget how he changed our lives.

  4. Shela and Cliff, I am greatly saddened by the news of Dash’s passing. I still morn for Bo and now Dash is gone; he was the last survivor of that very special generation. I know he enriched your life and breeding program as Bo did mine. We are lucky to have been the caretakers of these magnificant ‘creatures’. My heart is with you both.

    • Illene thank you. We will always share something extremely special. Despite the busyness of life and miles between our hearts are knit for eternity. Thank you for those kind words and thoughts. They mean the world. Cliff sends a hug too!

  5. An additional note: We were lucky to have loved and been loved by them. Baby Dar is a lot like them both and a treasure.

    • It is cool that Baby Dar carries on what those before her began. Thanks for having her with you. I hope she makes us both proud!

  6. Oh Shela,
I am so sorry. My heart aches for you and your family right now. He was just beautiful. I am so glad he didn’t suffer and his last moments were peaceful. Take care of yourselves and know you and your family are in our prayers.

    • Thanks Ingrid I am deeply touched by your kind thoughts. Everyone always loved Dash. Sometimes people would come to visit and say, “I want him!” Meaning they wanted our Dash. I have spoken to the boys and they know they now must step and try to fill some pretty big paw prints. Smiles

  7. We are very sorry for your loss. Glad to hear it was fast and painless. We will keep you guys in our thoughts.

  8. Cliff and Shela, I am so sorry to hear about Dash. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. I am so glad that he didn’t suffer and went peacefully in his sleep. I am proud that a little part of him lives on in Lucy. I’m sure he will be deeply missed by your family. Take care.

    • Idelle and Bob, I tried to remember those that had a closely related pup. I thought of Lucy and knew you would want to know. Hug Lucy for us! Yes, we are thankful for the ease with which he left this world. He deserved no less for all he gave. Thanks and hugs to all of you …….Shela and Cliff

  9. Thank you Dash, for leading your family to greatness. I find solace in that in my Molly, has great talent and love to give. I am in your debt for this great dog. My heart is very heavy, and sad for all of you. But the best we can do is give them back the love that they give unconditionally to us. May his spirit live on in your hearts.

    • Dear precious Jim………I think of you often and how your Molly has been a lifesaver to you. Our Weims are more than dogs and companions. You know firsthand how Molly means more to you than a person could imagine. Thanks for dropping us the note and for your kind thoughts. We do so appreciate them………take care of yourself and hug your Molly–Shela and Cliff

  10. Shela and Cliff –
I am so very sorry to hear about the passing of Dash. You both were in my thoughts a lot last night, as you still are today. I’m very thankful for Dash that he had the opportunity to say goodbye before passing along peacefully. We can all only hope for the same blessing when it comes the time to say good bye to our loving companions. I believe that Dash was both Cabela and Caleb’s grandpa. I remember meeting him when we came to pick Caleb up…he was so very sweet. Blessings to you both.

    • Thank you so much for those kind thoughts. I believe that pups get a lot from grandparents. Sometimes it seems they are more like the grandparents than the actual parents. Dash was very special in many ways. He is missed by us as well the extended family. It is tough on the grandchildren as well as our children. It is hard to adjust to him not being here.

  12. Oh Shela I am so sorry to read about Dash. My heart goes out to you and Cliff. We know how much you loved him and know he had a wonderful life with you. It was wonderful that you got to give him extra “loves” on his last night. He knew. All our love. Rod and Janice

  13. Remember, life isn’t about how many breaths you take, but how many times it takes your breath away! Dash did just this for so many. :-)

  14. I read about your loss and the tears came for mine. My love for my Smokey will live with me into eternity. I can’t replace him but perhaps I can find the pupy I’m picking up to fill that big void I feel in my heart. I feel a bit guilty but I know he wants to see me happy again and I see that you recently lost Dash and now I know you know how heavy my heart is. I thank God for leading me to your website and for everything falling into place so that I ended up with Penny’s #1… all in Divine Right Timing… our paths crossed and soon my heart will be filled once more..
