Frida

~Doing Great in Southern Oregon

Come on–we don’t need another snapshot.

Frida has adjusted wonderfully to life here in Southern Oregon. She gets either a walk in the forest or a playdate at the dog park on a daily basis, plenty of dropped food from our 3 kids (seems to be mostly broccoli or other veggies!), and snuggles when she can be bothered to sit still. We adore her and are so happy to have found you guys! 

I wanted to ask you what your opinion on spay timing is. Our vet is pretty invested in early spaying because of his work with various human societies and a desire for no unplanned puppies. While we VERY much do not want/need any unplanned puppies, we weren’t sure if spaying before her first heat was a good idea. Our puppy school teachers both recommend waiting until after adolescence so that Frida would benefit from hormones during her growth. So, I thought I’d check with you guys as actual Weimaraner experts! 

I have a couple of new pictures of Frida to share with you – as I said, she can be difficult to capture in a still moment! (Your initial assessment of her “being into herself” has proven to be pretty accurate HA!) I also included her “graduation” certificate from puppy school.

New Lap Dog

~For Mom

Good morning!  Duchess slept through the night and was a bit of a bed hog!  Imagine that!

Duchess was such a cuddly bug last night!  When I sat down this morning with my coffee she curled up on my lap next the to cat.  It was a pretty awesome morning!   Now I am excited for Saturday morning when I don’t have to get up and get ready for work.

Well, I will share her of course (with Foster)–but not all the time. Still, these guys have my heart. Here are some photos from picking her up to getting settled in at home. Diesel is still working on the idea –he and Duke were friends, but she is something new and different.

My beautiful boy, Foster, is infected with the Weimaraner virus. I think we are both hopelessly in love with these wonderful creatures.

Not so Long Ago

Dear Sheila–I am sad you lost the beloved Duke, at the same time I am happy you had Diesel there to bridge the gap. He and Foster made the loss a bit less if anything could. We are also delighted that we happened to have a gorgeous Silver Gray Female that could slip into your life. (BTW) It was precious to see Foster and how he reacted to the whole process. He is such a sweet boy, with a big heart. You are a good Mama.

Pushkin

One Year Celebrated

For his 1 year birthday, Pushkin graduated from the advanced obedience course. I was not sure it was going to happen. He was fussing while other people and their dogs were going through their paces so I decided to take him outside for a couple of minutes. Unfortunately, just before we got to the door his training collar came loose. That would not have been too bad if someone had not dropped a pork roll on the floor. He spied that, ran over and got it and took off like a bat out of Hades. He was all over the facility and would not respond to a recall as he knew he was in trouble.

I finally got him to sit and did a return and grabbed him by the scruff. Jennifer (the trainer) came over and held him while I got his collar back on. We waited until all of the other dogs finished and then went through the commands. He behaved quite well.

Go figure! Everyone in the class clapped for him when we finished. Ya gotta love the Wiley Weims!

Just Napping

     ~He’s getting along nicely.

The above snapshot is taken with my wife’s dog Caoimhe (pronounced Keeva). She has taken to him very nicely… They play a lot.

Here he is with Ruger, who actually curled up there when Jaeger was already there. Ruger is progressing slower; he has never been one to play a lot with other dogs.

Jaeger is still gaining like a horse, 16.9lbs today. He doesn’t like crate training, but we are slowly making progress.

It appears you are off to a good start incorporating the new OwyheeStar Weim into your family. It is a plus that Caoimhe likes to play with him. The most significant thing where he is going to hunt is to get him following in Ruger’s paw prints in the field. We know you have this as a goal. There are so many things when you bring home the Weimaraner–the crate-training you mentioned, housebreaking, the recall, and other essential disciplines that it takes focus. You, having been down this path before understand all too well for what we speak. We look forward to hearing news from time to time of Jaeger and his exploits.

Duke

Reporting on Duke

Duke is 9 weeks, 3 days now and adjusting well with us. We are working on the puppy biting, potty training, fetching and walking on a leash. He loves running with the other dogs in the backyard and learning which cats he can and can’t mess with! 😉 He especially loves our cat Tiger who tolerates being tackled by Duke daily! He also loves our walks down to the bus stop to pick up his human siblings. We are really enjoying him, he’s got so much personality and sass already!

Blast From the Past

Garden Raiders

Mousse, Cindee, Vidalia, Hollee, and Ginger–the pumpkin and tomato nibblers

Weaving DNA is tricky. Very often, you rely on experience, information gathered, and your best hunch. At OwyheeStar, we have kept the DNA pools fairly consistent. The way in which we did this was a bit too complicated to explain. Overall, the result has been similar–looks, personality, and general temperament. Even so, there are differences. At one point in time, we were desperately trying to get a particular mating to achieve a specific goal. There were many failed attempts–matings that didn’t produce a litter. Nonetheless, we kept trying and eventually, we had four females born to a litter of four pups (Cindee, Ginger, Vidalia, and Mousse). Some of these you will recognize. The parents of the four were Callie and Zee–in case you are interested.

Vidalia never produced a litter–not even a single pup. She probably was the finest-looking if you want to nitpick. Cindee and Ginger produced a few small litters of very lovely and well-received pups. Mousse was the one who has produced multiple litters and a couple of title-earning Weims–Juniper and Molly. Juniper has a show title and the NAVHDA Natural Ability; Molly has the latter as well.

Hollee (also pictured) was nearly the same DNA pool (missing one-leg in her pedigree if you want to compare to the other girls). She was a single pup born to Deli in a litter sired by Zee. Honestly, when Cliff said we would keep them all, I shuttered. It is expensive and a lot of extra work–impossible to give everyone the attention you would like too! Nonetheless, over time Cliff’s decision proved correct.

The fenced garden sat alongside our backyard. The pumpkin you see escaped the garden fence to the driveway. I pulled it along the fencing to make sure it was out of the way. For the photo, I turned this golden gem around. The nibblers were able to get their teeth and tongue through the fence to help themselves to the super healthy snack. Not only did they enjoy this but many of the prized heirloom specimen tomatoes turned out to be hollow at picking. It is amazing how they got their tongues through the fence and emptied the red gems. Therefore, you might say a fence is a fence, but it might not stop the Weimaraner from finding a way to get what they deem theirs for the taking.
